Chekhov draws the colourful picture of the contemporary Russian life in his
one-act play "The Proposal". Here he portraits a micro sketch of the
middle class Russian society in 19th century.
Russian social status lies in the quantity of land and property. Dress
is the way to express their passion. The domestic wellbread pet dog exhibites
the attitake of the owner.
Marriage is nothing but a social need for them. The get married for
their personal interest and love is not important for them. Having more land
and upgrating social status is their main motto. Lomov wants to marry Natalya
to make his gripe strong over the oxen medows. On the other side Natalya wants
to marry him for the better life, fame and future. The dramatist portraits the
social satire and illustrated thus the marriage custom is too much important to
the people if contemporary Russian life.
