Three Questions by Leo Tolstoy
Q:- Discuss the three
questions and their answers. What are the answers did the hermit give to the
Tsar?
Ans:-* In the story "Three
Questions", Tolstoy shows his philosophical views. The story starts with a
Tsar's problem. He wanted to know the answers of three questions, appeared in
his mind. The first question was what was the right time to start a work. He
declared reward for the satisfactory answer.
All the learned as well as wise men came to the Tsar and gave their
answers. In reply of his first question, some proclaimed that one must ready an
advance a table of days, months and years as well as maintain it strictly. Some
said, one should do his duty properly at time. Some learned persons declared
that it was not possible for anyone to know the right time to work. But some
said that only magicians knew the answer.
The Tsar's second question was
who woukd be the right person to give most importance.
Some replied that the councillors were the most important persons to the
Tsar. According to some wise men, the warriors were the most needed for the
Tsar. Some said priest, some said doctors.
His third question was what was the most important work to do. Some
replied that science was the most important thing in the world. According to
some wise persons, the skill in warfare or religious worship could be the most
important work to be done in life.
The Tsar wasn't well satisfied with the answers of his three questions
given by the wise persons, as the answers were different and contradictory with
each other. So he didn't give any reward to anyone.
** The hermit talked little. He
believed in self learning. On the questions of the Tsar he helped him to get
the answers by self experience instead of telling him. The hermit said, when
did the Tsar dag the soil fir him, it was the right time fir him. And also said
that the digging was the most important work for him and the hermit was the
most important person for him at that time.
But when he treated the wounded man, treatmenting time was the most
important time, treatment was the most important work as well as the wounded
man was the most important person for him. He taught the Tsar that present time
is the most important time, the work that we do in then is the most important
work and with whom we are at present, is the most important parson.
