Answer the following questions :
1. "And out of its leprous hide" - What does "hide" refer to? Why is it called "leprous"? How is the tree finally killed?
Answer : Here 'hide' refers to bark of the tree.
The bark of a tree looks like dry, rough and brown skin of a leprosy patient.
The tree has grown slowly over the years. It has already attained a huge shape. The expression, 'Consuming the earth' signifies the process of drawing nutrients from the sun, air and the soil. The tree takes in the vitality of the earth and grows bigger day by day. Already it has taken a good number of years to reach its present height. The roots of the tree, firmly embedded in the soil, absorb years of nourishment from the earth and the tree gradually becomes a symbol of indomitable energy in the world of Nature.
The phrase, "leprous hide" means the bark full of scales over it. But it is indicative of morbidity that reveals the negative attitude of the poet towards the tree.
2. "But her next question removed my doubts." - Who does "her" refer to? What "doubts" did the narrator have? How did the "question" remove the "doubts"?
Answer : 'Her' refers to the young girl, the co-passenger of the narrator.
The narrator had doubts whether she had noticed that he could not see.
Her question was, 'Why don't you look out of the windows?'
This question removed his doubts because she would not have asked him to 'look out of the window' if she had known that he could not see. So her question removed the narrator's doubts.
3. Justify the title of the story "The Eyes Have It"?
Answer : The tittle directly refers to the story of the two blind travellers in the train. It appears to be a prologue in itself. But it has a meaning and significance of its own. There is also a note of irony in it. In the final part of the story we realize what the author intends to convey. At first the two passengers try to conceal their personal infirmity from each other. Although the two characters do not have vision, yet their inner eye is sharper than those having eyes. Thus blindness can be a blessing in disguise at times. It enables one to perceive the world that lies hidden to ordinary vision. So the tittle introduces the theme of vision and blindness and throws a subtle hint over the situation of the fellow passenger after the revealation of truth.
4. Write a summary of the following passage :
Communication is part of our daily life. We greet one another, smile or frown, depending on our moods. Animals too, communicate, much to our surprise. Just like us, interaction among animals can both verbal or non-verbal. Singing is one of the ways in which animals interact with one another. Male blackbirds often use their melodious songs to catch the attention of the females. These songs are usually rich in notes variation, encoding various kinds of messages. Songs are also used to warn and keep off other blackbirds from their territory, usually a place where they dwell and reproduce.
Large mammals in the oceans, as reported by some sailors, sing too. Enormous whales groan and grunt while smaller dolphins and porpoises produce pings, whistles and clicks. These sounds are surprisingly received by other mates as far as several hundred kilometres away. Besides singing, body language also forms a large part of animals' communication tactics. Dominant hyenas exhibit their power by raising fur hackles on their necks and shoulders, while the submissive ones normally surrender to the powerful parties by crouching their heads low and curling their lips a little, revealing their teeth in friends smiles.
Answer : To understand each other in daily life, communication is very important not only for us as human beings but also for animals as well. Animals communicate with one another by both verbally and non verbally. They produce some strange sounds to convey their message to each other. To attract female black birds, the black birds sing. Their uncodified sings can also work as a warning. Even in the ocean whales and dolphins do communicate by making their natural sounds, even if their partners are far from them. Again body language plays a significant role in communication in most of these cases. Hynas normally use their body gestures to show their dominance in their area and to protect from invaders. Moreover, the same body gestures can show submissiveness for the weak ones.
