SECTION A : READING COMPREHENSION


1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :


One quiet afternoon, he lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming again. Unknown to him, the ship stood offshore from his old farm. In Jon's dream the seasons turned rapidly and as each turned, so did Jon in his bed. Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about. It called up a squall from the clear sky that hit the ship without a warning.

The wind had been whirling about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars. "Its' his fault," the sailors cried. They shouted in anger and fear and tried to rid the cap off his head.

Well, they were unsuccessful, for it was a fairy cap.


Answer the following questions :


(i) What happened as Jon lay fast asleep?

Answer :  Jon lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming again.


(ii) How did the squall arise suddenly?

Answer : In Jon's dream the seasons turned rapidly and as each turned, so did Jon in his bed. Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about. It called up a squall from the clear sky that hit the ship without a warning.


(iii) Describe the condition of the ship in the squall.

Answer : In the squall the condition of the ship without a warning. The wind had whirling about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars.


(iv) What did the sailors do to stop the squall?

Answer : The Sailors shouted in anger and fear and tried to rid the cap off Jon's head.


2. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below :


On 16th January, 1941, Sisir finished his dinner early and drove to Elgin Road around 8.30 p.m. He parked the Wanderer at the back of the house.

Sisir and Subhas had maintained total secrecy about the plan of escape. None of the family members knew anything except Subhas's niece, Ila and a male cousin, Dwijen. Subhas and Sisir waited until the rest of the Bose family had fallen asleep.

Subhas had changed into his disguise as Muhammad Ziauddin. He was dressed in a long brown coat, baggy shalwars and a black fez. He wore gold wire-rimmed spectacles.


A. Write 'T' for true and 'F' for false statements in the given boxes. Write supporting statements for your answers :

SECTION C : WRITING


6. Write a letter to your friend (in about 80 words), who stays far away, describing about a festival of West Bengal. You may use the following points :

Answer : Dear Sonali, 

          How are you? Hope you are well by the grace of God. I am fine. In this letter I am going to tell you about festival of West Bengal which is very popular.

         Durga Puja is one of the most well known and widely celebrated festival of West Bengal. It is mainly a festival of four days namely Saptami, Astami, Navami and Dashami. Durga Puja is celebrated in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Odisha with great enthusiasm and arrangements. In this festival many peoples of different occupations are involved. The Main attraction of this festival is the idol goddess Durga with her four children. The Puja pandals are decorated nicely. I paint these days enjoying with my friends families and relatives which gives me much pleasure. On the fourth day the idol was immersed in the nearby water bodies.

ABANINDRANATH TAGORE

Abanindranath Tagore was one of the finest painters India has ever produced. He was born on August 7, 1871  at Jorasanko, Calcutta. Gunrndranath Tagore was his father and Saudamini Devi was his mother. Abanindranath inherited the rich and cultural background of Tagore family. His elder brother Gagenendranath Tagore and his sister Sunayani Devi, were also artists. When he was studying at the Sanskrit College in Kolkata, he started learning the nuances of art. He then joined at the famous Government College of Art and Craft in the year 1890. There he learnt to use pastels and oil paintings by European artists, O. Ghilardi and Charles Palmer. His paintings like ‘Bharat Mata’, ‘The Passing of Shah Jahan’, are some of his outstanding artistic creation. Abanindranath not only excelled in painting or drawing but also made great contribution in the field of literature. He is famous for his literary creation like, ‘Khirer Putul’, ‘Raj Kahini’, ‘Buro Angla’ etc. This outstanding painter passed away on 5th December, 1951. His death created a vacuum in the world of art and painting in India.
